Struggling with motivating the children in your care?

I’ve been there.

The children were defiant.

I knew exactly what they needed and expected them to follow my instructions! I ended up overusing time-out in the classroom, and I was too controlling at home.

I was too reactive.

I found myself yelling at the kids more than I wanted. My conversations would end in tears, either the kid’s tears or mine.

I was emotionally exhausted.

Children take a lot of energy. Working overtime to make perfect moments and lesson plans was exhausting. Seeing that it didn’t work the way I expected it to was overwhelming. I started escaping and needing a break, every day.

Unexpected life events threatened to derail me.

There’s nothing like hospital time to make you question everything you’re doing and why you’re doing it. I questioned the impact I was making with all the children in my care. Was I ‘empowering leaders’ as I set out to do?

Self Awareness

When my older son became a teenager, he had a brutally honest conversation with me. He opened my eyes to how disconnected and controlling I had been, though I was sincerely trying to make the largest impact possible on every child I met. This powerful conversation opened my eyes.

My Own Childhood

I remembered my own childhood. I was raised in a temple. I meditated before sunrise and went to the temple before school for 18 years. I studied Sanskrit verses with English, Math and more.

When I heard Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, and Saint Bhaktivinoda’s Diversity Speech, the vision that came to me was not of adults, but of children: empowered children.

Children of all races, genders, cultures supporting the earth together

I realized the spiritual principles I learned in my childhood could be directly applied to the challenges I faced as a parent and educator. Every interaction I had with children could be enthused by those principles.

Now everything I do is infused with those ancient principles.
